Volunteer Arlington to Host 7th Annual MLK Day of Service
ARLINGTON, Va. – Volunteer Arlington, a public-private partnership between the Leadership Center for Excellence and Arlington County, will hold its seventh annual MLK Day of Service event on Monday, January 15, 2024, to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The event features a variety of volunteer projects to encourage people to make Martin Luther King, Jr. Day a “day on” instead of a day off. The projects support Volunteer Arlington’s nonprofit and Arlington County partner organizations.
You can register for more than 20 service projects at volunteerarlington.org/mlk to volunteer in person or virtually.
“Our 7th Annual MLK Day of Service is set to make a tremendous impact in our community,” said Lisa Fikes, president and CEO of the Leadership Center for Excellence. “Through this community event, we seek to honor Dr. King’s legacy and offer a variety of ways to listen, learn, and work toward his dream of a beloved community. We are appreciative of the incredible individuals, groups, and businesses who are choosing to make this a ‘day on’ for service.”
On January 15, check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. at Washington-Liberty High School. There will be an interactive photo booth and opportunities to connect with local nonprofits. The first 750 people to check in for the event will receive an MLK Day of Service t-shirt.
The opening program will be in the auditorium from 9:00 – 9:30 a.m. It will feature a brief play by Encore Stage & Studio, as well as the presentation of the 2024 Beloved Community Award.
Following the opening program, volunteers will proceed to their projects, either at Washington-Liberty High School or offsite. Special thank you to our Lead Sponsors, Amazon and Boeing, for their generous support of this community day of service.
“Amazon is proud to support Volunteer Arlington at this year’s MLK Day of Service, “A Day On, Not A Day Off”,” said Patrick Phillippi, Amazon’s head of Community Engagement for Greater Washington. “We’re grateful to be a part of a community that has so many ways for people to come together and help others. We look forward to participating and encourage all to come as they are able.”
“Boeing is excited to partner with Volunteer Arlington for this year’s MLK Day of Service,” said Ziad Ojakli, executive vice president of government operations at Boeing. “We’re proud to honor Dr. King’s legacy of service and deeply value any opportunity to give back to the Arlington community that means so much to us.”
The MLK Day of Service is a free event that is open to the public. Pre-registration is preferred, but walk-ins are welcome at Washington-Liberty High School and can join opportunities as space allows.
